15 Grosvenor Square W1

14 October 1940

On 14 October 1940, at 8.20 pm, Nos 15 and 16 Grosvenor Square W1 were struck by a high explosive bomb, inflicting six casualties - of whom two were reported trapped. No 16 was virtually demolished.

This incident required the services of ambulances from the Berkeley Square Depot and from Dean Street, according to the ARP report. An 11.59 pm message queried whether more services needed to be dispatched to the site.

The response indicated that rescue crews were still trying to recover a body from 16 Grosvenor Square, but that no other services would be needed. An ARP message form dated 25 October 1940 revealed that a body was finally recovered from 16 Grosvenor Square, and was "awaiting removal from (the) Gardener's hut in the gardens".

That body recovered was a relative on mine.  My great aunt Gertrude Robinson and her son were killed in this bombing.  Next time I'm in London, I will visit this area.  Thank you for the information.
