Gladys Remembers
My mum couldn't see any sense in celebrating VE Day
By Gladys Jones
I was born in 1942, so I don’t remember much of the war. I only really know what my mum told me. I know my mum wouldn’t let my brother and I join in the VE celebrations put on by the Peabody flats because my father was killed in 1944 when I was two, so she couldn’t see any sense in celebrating. I think it was quite a sad time for those coming home and those who didn’t; it shows the difference between them.
